Update on Coronavirus (COVID-19) – Wage Subsidy Delivered

2 Apr

Please view the message below from Pat Conaghan MP, Federal Member for Cowper, regarding an update on wage subsidies:

Wage Subsidy Delivered

I understand our community is distressed due to the coronavirus pandemic. Our Government is doing all it can to assist the Australian community during this difficult time and on Sunday, we announced a wage subsidy for around six million workers of $1,500 per fortnight through their employer, before tax.  The $130 billion JobKeeper payment will help keep Australians in jobs and tackle the significant economic impact from the coronavirus.

Sole traders (including those who are self-employed or have employees) will be eligible for the wage subsidy too. Both businesses and sole traders are eligible if their business has a turnover of less than $1 billion and their turnover will be reduced by 30 per cent or more due to coronavirus, relative to a comparable period of a minimum of one month a year ago.

Here is how it works:

  • -The payment will be paid to employers, for up to six months, for each eligible employee that was on their books on 1 March 2020 and is retained or continues to be engaged by that employer.
  • -Where a business has stood down employees since 1 March, the payment will help them maintain connection with their employees.
  • -The program commenced yesterday, 30 March 2020, with the first payments to be received by eligible businesses in the first week of May as monthly arrears from the Australian Taxation Office. Eligible businesses can begin distributing the JobKeeper payment immediately and will be reimbursed from the first week of May.

There are also a number of other government payments and packages to assist workers and businesses. Visit www.business.gov.au for a summary of the other support measures.

My office remains open and my staff and I can provide help on these or any other matters. Please follow the rigorous social distancing rules in place and do these simple things to help slow the spread of this deadly virus: wash your hands regularly, cover coughs and sneezes and stay at home except when doing essential tasks like grocery shopping and visiting your GP.

Yours sincerely,
