As part of the lead up to the 2018 Commonwealth Games which is taking place on the Gold Coast in April 2018, Bellingen has been selected to host a section of the Queens Baton Relay (QBR). This event will take place on Thursday 1 February when the Baton makes its way from Armidale to Coffs Harbour.
Baton bearers will carry the baton on a route around Bellingen. The names of the selected baton bearers and details of the route are still to be announced.
To maximise community involvement, Bellingen Chamber of Commerce members have been invited by Anna Joy, Community Wellbeing Planning Officer with Council, who is coordinating this event, to support the Queens Baton Relay in the lead up to the day and on the day itself. One idea that has been suggested is to ask local businesses with a shop front to decorate their window with a sporting theme. In addition, Council are hoping to get some nominations of local people who have positively contributed to the sporting culture of our communities who could also be profiled in shop windows as part of the display.
There may be other ways that the business community would like to be involved and I will be happy to pass on any ideas that you may wish to propose.
We would like to know:
a) If you would be interested in decorating your shop window in the lead up to the event, probably in time for the market weekend on the 20th January until after the baton has passed through
b) If you have any other ideas to promote this event so that Bellingen businesses can also benefit from increased exposure
I look forward to hearing from you.
